Weight Loss Camps

Weight loss camps or fat farms, fat camp as they are often called, started in the 1980's to encourage people to lose weight through extreme dieting and vigorous exercise. Although this did result in weight loss, it was difficult to maintain the loss once people returned to their normal life. Now instead of using the negative term "fat farm", camps prefer to be called fitness camps or weight loss retreats, placing the emphasis on changing to a healthy life style, through eating the right food, rather than dieting, and exercise that can be maintained as part of daily routine.

With the increasing problem of obese children, some youth camps have been set up to specialize in weight loss for children. The emphasis of these camps is on having fun rather than a punishing regime, and parents should ensure that the camp they chose should not make a child feel they have done something wrong. Self confidence is part of developing a healthy life style.

Wellspring Camps

Wellspring Camps have camps for children throughout the world. Their philosophy is to help campers lose weight and keep it off long term through adopting a new healthier lifestyle. Fun activities, based on the location, make the whole experience enjoyable. They will send you information on the camps to help you decide whether your child can benefit.
