Most children start to walk at about 12 months old and enter the
toddler stage.
One of the first constructive play toys that you can buy, before
your toddler actually reaches the stage of walking independently, is a
walker containing bricks to help them learn to balance.
This can be either a plastic or wooden toy. The advantage of wood
is that the weight will help to prevent the walker from tipping up,
although if you choose a wooden one, make sure that the corners
are rounded in case your child falls. Most walkers come complete
with bricks, brightly colored to help teach color recognition and
they often have letters or numbers added. This is one of the best
toddler toys, combining motor co-ordination with teaching color and
symbol recognition as well as something to transport toys around in!
Children's Puzzles
Simple children's puzzles are a great way to introduce the
concept of shape. Wood puzzles are the strongest and can be 2-3
pieces locking together, or an wooden board with shapes, such as
animals, to fit in. Large plastic balls with openings for shapes
to be fitted through are always popular. If you can stand the
noise, wooden shapes, to teach squares, circles and triangles, can be
hammered through a board.
Artwork
Coloring is a favorite pastime with all children. Little fingers
find it hard to grasp pencils so start them off with chunky
crayons. Most toddlers enjoy paint, but they do love big pots of
paint and large brushes, so if you are worried about the house and
floor getting decorated, enrol them into a nursery, where they can
really express themselves and also develop their socializing skills.
Children and Role Play
Children's role play is important to help them understand their
environment. Dolls and action
men have always been popular, allowing them to create a personal
world they can control.
Reading books and stories are essential to stimulate their
imagination as well as preparation for learning to read. Books with pages containing different textures will
fascinate them.
Outdoor Toys For Toddlers
Outdoor activities are essential for developing motor skills as
well as keeping them healthy. If you do not have the space for
a paddling pool, sand pit or riding a tricycle, make time for
regular trips to your local park to use the slides, swings and
climbing frames.
It is not necessary to buy expensive toys, very often the simplest
homemade things give delight. The most important thing to remember
is that your child needs rounded development, so don't concentrate
on just one aspect. If you notice they have a particular talent
it will develop and they will be happier and more successful with a
full personality.
