If you have decided that your child needs additional help with their school work you must then find a personal tutor by recommendation or using a tutoring service.
The ideal method is to go by recommendation. If you know another parent who is using a tutor find out as much as possible. How long have they used the tutor? What are the tutor's qualifications? How much does it cost? Is the child happy to go?
If you don't know another parent to ask, then enquire at your child's school, but be diplomatic in your approach, suggesting your child needs additional help could be seen as a criticism. If the teacher's report is poor, Open Evening will give you an opportunity to broach the matter.

Tutoring Services

If you cannot find someone through contacts then a tutor can be found through advertisements or a tutoring service. You should thoroughly check the credentials of anyone you employ, but it is crucial with a stranger. Ask to see their qualifications and about their experience. In the UK anyone working with children should have had a police background check run on them, although this may not be the same world-wide. If you use a reputable tutoring service all of these checks should have been done, but do ask the agency.

Many tutors prefer to teach in their own homes. There can be several reasons for this. Firstly they don't want to waste time driving, it can add to the cost of the tutoring. Secondly they want to be in control of the situation and this is not easy in someone else's home. A child has to form a personal relationship with a tutor. There may be psychological problems associated with a feeling of failure and a tutor needs to establish a bond to help build self-esteem. A tutor is not a therapist but should be a friend, someone to joke with and confide in, so that psychological barriers to learning are overcome. If you choose to take a child to a tutor it is even more important that you ensure all checks have been done.

Taking the decision to pay for child tutoring is not easy. It is an expense that could last years, but if you find the right tutor, the benefits for your child can be tremendous. However as a parent you should remember it is not just gaining good grades that is important, some children will not achieve that, it is equally important that your child, regardless of ability, develops self-esteem and does not feel a failure. Achieving that is the measure of a good tutor.
