Many parents worry when their children are not progressing at school and wonder whether they should employ an instructor for private tutoring. Taking such a decision requires careful consideration. If they decide to go ahead it will certainly mean months, possibly years, of expense and they must make sure they are employing the right person for their child to really benefit.

Reasons Why Your Child May Need a Tutor?

There are a number of reasons why a child may not be making progress at school and need a home tutoring service.
Some very young children may not seem to be learning at all when they first start school and it is worrying to see others progressing while your child seems unable to grasp the very basics. Normally these children are just late starters.
Many children of average intelligence struggle to get good grades. Some may have fallen behind because they have missed a period of schooling.
A family crisis, such as a divorce or death, can cause emotional problems with the child having difficulty concentrating. If you do employ a home tutor, be honest and tell them any problem, it will help in dealing with your child.
Sometimes a child can be hiding a problem, for example bullying at school, but the hidden anxiety may affect their work.
Many children are just not academic and need a helping hand, or they may be good in one subject, for example English, but find the sciences difficult.
Most children fall into these categories, but there is a small percentage who are handicapped, either physically or mentally. Parents should not automatically rule their child out of these categories. I tutored a boy with a problem I could not diagnose. It took years of pressuring both the education and medical authorities before he was finally diagnosed with a rare form of autism. He was moved to a special school where he thrived.

There are bright children whose parents are pushing unnecessarily. In this case parents should question their motives. If the child is attending a good school and is happy and not bored, does he really need a tutor?

If you do decide to use a private instructor for tutoring then there are a number of factors that should be considered when choosing a tutor. A good tutor will do more than just teach, he or she will build confidence and become a friend.
