Acne

As we all know, acne is a skin infection producing blackheads, whiteheads, spots or cysts that normally appear on the face, neck, back, chest and upper arms. If the acne is severe it can leave permanent scarring.
Teen acne hits at the worse time of a young person's life. Just when they are suddenly aware of the opposite sex and they are struggling to become independent individuals, their confidence is shattered by an eruption of pimples.

Causes of Acne

Acne is caused by the skin producing excessive amounts of oil that combine with dead skin cells and block the hair follicles resulting in an infection. Acne is not caused by dirt, overcleansing the skin may damage it and spread the acne infection further. Other misconceptions about acne are that it is caused by sexual activity, masturbation or poor diet. A healthy diet is always sensible for your well-being but don't blame fatty foods and chocolate for your acne!

Acne Treatment

There are many treatments available for acne, either over the counter medicines or a prescription from your doctor. Proprietory ointment can be expensive, and many people prefer to use natural remedies for acne. There is an article on acne treatment on this site.

If you think you have developed acne it is wise to consult your doctor, before you start any treatment, to ensure your diagnosis is correct. He will assess the severity of the acne, discuss the possible causes and decide the appropriate treatment. Diagnosis and early treatment will help prevent acne scarring. If you already have scarring then your doctor should suggest ways of reducing it and also discuss the psychological effect the appearance of acne may be having on you. Many people, particularly teenagers, can become quite depressed and it is an issue that should not be ignored.

If you are a teenager suffering from acne try to remember that, in the majority of cases, acne is a passing phrase. Most teenagers suffer at some time and will probably sympathize and offer advice, based on personal experience, if you talk about the acne and don't feel embarassed.
